Avocado may be a classified as a fruit, but it’s a delicious vegetarian addition to any meal — even dessert.
PICKING THE BEST
The darker the color, the riper the avocado. Look for avocados that are not only dark in color, but soft, and still have a little firmness to them. If the avocado is too squishy, it’s way overripe and will probably have a rotten taste to it.
Keep in mind that after you open an avocado, they will brown quickly once exposed to air. Using lemon juice will keep it from getting that icky, unappetizing color.
Depending on the climate, avocados can be harvested practically year round, but are freshest during the winter and spring. Mediterranean and tropical climates are best for avocados. The fruit doesn’t ripen until it falls from the tree or is picked, so the growing and harvest seasons are quite long compared to other fruit. Growers will often keep their crop on the trees until the last possible moment as to gain the best harvest.
WHAT TO DO WITH THEM?
- Party time: Most people know avocados are used in the popular dip, guacamole. Grab some of your favorite tortillas and dig in.
- Raw: Do not cook avocados. They tend to become inedible when treated as such, and develop an extremely bitter taste. Keep them tasty and raw.
- Dessert: Many countries use avocados in milkshakes and as a topper on ice cream. Moroccans use avocado with milk, confectioner’s sugar, and orange flower water for a delicious drink. Other cultures use combine avocado and chocolate.
- Complimentary: Try avocado as a topper on your next veggie burger or in your salad.
- Vegan applications: Avocados make a wonderful butter substitute.
Avocados are high in fat, much higher than most fruits. But it’s monounsaturated fat, which is better for you than many (if not most) others. Other healthy benefits include lots of fiber, B vitamins, and potassium.
Keep unripened avocados out of the refrigerator. Ripened ones can be kept happily with your other veggies in the veggie crisper of your fridge up to 10 days.
WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?
Avocados are truly a Mexican fruit, hailing from the state of Puebla. Evidence of the cultivation of avocados dates back to 10,000 B.C! Evidence of ancient avocado agriculture is prevalent throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Avocados were introduced to Asia around 1750.
Known in the scientific world as Persea americana, avocados are distantly related to cinnamon. Both belong to the Laurel family.
Most parts of an avocado are poisonous to animals, so don’t give them to your pets.
Avocados have been known as “alligator pears” in some circles.
Interesting statistic: 50 million pounds of avocados are consumed every Super Bowl Sunday in the United States. Holy guacamole!
