Welcome to Miniature Fruit Tree!    Here we provide you with information on how to grow Dwarf Fruit Trees in your own yard, whether it is in the ground, a pot, or any container of your choice.
I just love growing all types of food.  Yes, fruit trees are one of my favorites.  Reason?  Because once established, they readily produce an abundance of succulent goodies year after year. Not only is fruit healthy and tasty, growing it can be great fun too.    Some people love it so much that it becomes their hobby!

Growing Fruit in Containers.
Growing fruit in containers is getting easier as many new varieties become available.  That said growing a miniature fruit tree does require a certain amount of tender loving care.   I write this article so that you can refer to it whenever you need to.   Additionally, as this website grows, you will find new pages appearing covering not only fruit trees but nut trees- and everything from Avocado's to Zucchini.

The Growing Site for your Miniature Fruit Tree

First of all, check the site conditions where you want to keep your Miniature Fruit Tree before heading off to the nearest nursery to purchase it.

So, you’re buying more than one?  Think about where you’re going to place them: in the ground itself?  Wall-box?  Planter-box?  Pot?
Consider such things as adequate sunlight, not too much wind, etcetera.  Get these requirements worked out before you buy.
Unlike flowers and vegetables, fruit trees can continue to grow on for years- decades!    This means you will have to plan for, in some cases, continual growth for many years as the trees reach for the sky.
Even smaller plants might grow far larger than you anticipate.   Will the balcony you place them on be able to hold the weight?   If this is the case, will they block out that beautiful view?
Will they poke above the wall or fence and give offense to your neighbors?   If you feel that it’s pretty sure that they will...eventually, anyway – it might be an idea to switch to a potted vegetable garden.
Unless you choose you plants wisely to suit the available space or conditions, they may not thrive - and all your hard work will have been wasted.

Click How much space and where for your Miniature Fruit Tree?

A great position in the sun is vital for fruit trees.  Most need a minimum of six hours full sun to set fruit.
Once the plant is established in its container and the roots are poking out, it is highly recommended that you move your miniature fruit tree into a larger container (minimum 42-45 cm) 18 inches.   This will ensure that the roots and container will not dry out too quickly.
It is also recommended that you place an inch or two of gravel in the bottom of your pot to allow for better drainage.
TIP:  About one third compost to two-thirds normal potting mix will help retrain moisture and provide the miniature fruit tree with the best available nutrients.  Also, add a couple of handfuls of water crystals to retain moisture.

Trees, Bushes, Shrubs and Climbing Plants

Any plant you intend to grow will need sufficient space if it is to thrive.  It needs to produce flowers before those flowers become fruit.
Certain principles of botany cannot be ignored if you want optimum results.
While trees like Apple, Cherry and Pear are among the most reliable for producing fruit, the end results depend very much of the methods you employ to see to yours trees’ welfare.

Perennial plants such as Strawberries or Rhubarb produce relatively small amounts of both foliage and fruit.   Therefore they can be planted more closely than, say, bushy plants.
Bushes obviously require more space to grow well.   This means the right size containers.   Perennials, on the other hand, do not require so much space to grow.    It is a matter of thinking and planning ahead.

A Miniature Fruit tree such as a climbing Kiwi fruit, or a grape fruit, can be trained to grow upwards.  For example, towards a balcony, from either the garden or a container. This makes care of it just that little bit easier.

How to choose fruit trees.

In principle, all fruit trees and bushes can be grown in pots and containers. Fruit trees generally start their life in a nursery container, where most of them are grafted onto dwarfing root-stock in plastic pots.
This is the norm.   Here they remain until they are purchased.  Which means that most species are available most of the year?   You simply have to check out their availability at the nursery or nurseries of your choice.

Miniature Fruit Trees are chosen for their less vigorous root system.  This makes them perfect for container growing. If you do plan to plant a tree and want it to be large and vigorous, then it would be advisable to purchase a normal fruit tree and keep it in, at minimum, a 5- litre pot initially.   When it outgrows this, plant it out.
When selecting, look for a healthy tree with new bud growth and a nice straight trunk. Try to avoid buying trees that have the graft too high up the trunk.  Also, look for a shorter, stocky tree, rather than a long lanky one.
