Backyard Aquaponics Get Fishy!

Backyard Aquaponics
Backyard Aquaponics. Why You Should Turn Your Backyard Into Your Very Own Aquaponics Garden.

Creating your own aquaponics garden is a great idea.  Even if you have a small yard to work with you can still setup yourself a great system.  If you are just now initiating your research for your own aquagarden, you will be happy to find out that it is not as hard as one might guess it would be.

Aquaponics is the mixing of aquaculture with the practice of hydroponics.  Aquaculture is also known as aquafarming.  The growing of plants, fish, and other water life.

Hydroponics is the growing of plants using a mostly water only system.  No planting in soil being done. Aquaponics is advanced organic hydroponics and is definitely the future. Yes, you can join in with your very own Backyard Aquaponics system!

Aquaponics Meets Hydroponics!

Aquaponic system
Keep on reading and find out how!

The great thing about the integration of these two farming systems is the reduction of waste.  Waste can be toxic to dispose of.  As an example, the fish can produce a lot of waste which can be used to water and feed the plants that you are growing.

This makes Backyard Aquaponics very sustainable and cost effective!

You will have to decide on what fish and plants will be best to grow and cultivate in your aquaponics garden.

“All plants that can be grown using a hydroponic system can be grown using in an aquaponics system”.

This will depend on several different factors.  An example of some of those may be where you live, the climate you have, and the changes that the climate has throughout the year.  The size of the area you are working with and the amount of time that you have for the upkeep.  Also, of course, the budget you have to work with.

What type of Fish for Your Backyard Aquaponics Garden?

Fish Aquaponics
There is actually a very large variety of fish for you to choose from that will thrive in your new backyard aquaponics garden.  The very first thing to consider is; Are these fish for consuming or are they for show, or possibly for resale, such as collector Koi fish.

If you are planning on growing the fish for consumption then you would have the option to grow different fish at different times of the year as the climate changes.

If you have the luxury of having warmer weather all year a good fish option could be Tilapia.
Tilapia is the most common of all, but it is illegal in some countries such as Australia.
Tilapia is extremely popular for fish farming and is in fact one of the most popular fish for farming in the world.  They breed easy; they grow fast, and can deal with lesser quality water conditions.
Tilapia would need a fairly large tank for the backyard aquaponics farmer, but the possibilities are definitely there!

If you are dealing with a climate that would bring in cooler waters, trout or Bass might be the way to go.  They grow fast and are very popular with fish eaters.
Now if you are looking for fish for show and not consuming, you have the Koi and of course the Goldfish.  Both are hardy fish that are rugged enough to deal with colder climates and look great in your pond.  They are also super easy to care for.

All those fish are going to need clean water and often.  That dirty water can be sent to feed your new hydroponic style garden.
